Fushimi Inari Today

Methodology

How we estimate crowds at Fushimi Inari

Our crowd score is an estimate, not a count. It combines the typical visit pattern for each day and hour with the current weather in Kyoto.

Where does the data come from?

Google Maps shows how busy a place usually is at each hour of the week ("Popular times"). We read those patterns by eye, hour by hour for every day of the week, and convert them into our own 0–100 scale.

We don't collect them automatically, and we don't copy or show Google's charts. The charts on this site are drawn from our own numbers.

For each place, 100 means that place's busiest hour of the week. A 60 at one place and a 60 at another don't mean the same number of people, so we only compare places by the shape of their day.

Which places does it cover?

  1. 01

Fushimi Inari Taisha as a whole

The basis of the live crowd score on the top page and the hourly forecast.

  2. 02

    Senbon Torii

Its own hourly forecast, shown on the Senbon Torii page.

  3. 03

JR Inari and Keihan Fushimi-Inari stations

Background only. Station patterns include commuters and local riders, so they are not used in the score.

What do the levels mean?

ScoreLevel
0–25Quiet
26–50Moderate
51–75Busy
76–100Very busy

After the adjustments below, the score is capped at 100.

How does the weather change the score?

Every hour we fetch the latest observation from the Japan Meteorological Agency's AMeDAS station in Kyoto and adjust the score for that hour:

WeatherEffect on the score
Rain (1 mm or more in the past hour)−20%
Heavy rain (10 mm or more in the past hour)−40%
Sunny, on a Saturday or Sunday+10%
Hot (33°C or more), 10:00–16:59−20%
Hot (33°C or more), 5:00–9:59 and 17:00–19:59+10%
Cloudy, or sunny on a weekdayNo change

If the latest reading is 2 hours old or more, we show it with its time and stop adjusting the score for weather.

What about busy seasons?

PeriodEffect on the score
New Year, 1 January – 3 JanuaryNo hourly score. The page shows "Extremely busy" instead
Autumn leaves, 15 November – 30 November+20%
Rainy season, 4 June – 8 July−20%
Cherry blossom seasonNo change yet (no adjustment set)

Where can it be wrong?

  • New Year, public holidays and festivals can be far busier than the estimate. We don't adjust for public holidays or events.
  • The data describes a typical week. A tour group or a sudden change in the weather can make any hour busier or quieter.
  • These are our own estimates, not official figures from Fushimi Inari Taisha.
