Route stop 01
What is the Romon Gate at Fushimi Inari?
The great two-storey gate you walk through first, a short walk from JR Inari Station. Tradition dates it to 1589 and Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and an inscription found during repairs bears the same year.

What you'll find here
The Romon is the shrine’s main gate and one of the largest gates at any Japanese shrine. It stands at the top of the approach from JR Inari Station.
Tradition says Toyotomi Hideyoshi had it built in 1589. A letter has come down in which Hideyoshi promised an offering of 10,000 koku of rice if his mother recovered from an illness.
For a long time it was not certain that the gate and the letter belonged together. When the gate was taken apart for repairs in 1973, an ink inscription with the same year, 1589, was found inside, which settled the question.
How crowded does it get?
100 is the busiest hour of the week at Romon Gate itself. The dark bar is the current hour (Japan time). In our data, its busiest hour falls between 9:00 and 14:00 on every day of the week.
Unlike the shrine as a whole, this spot's line stays well above zero at night. Treat the night hours with caution and use the chart to see when it peaks during the day.
